Post-cosmetic surgery care and massage

Post-surgical lymphatic drainage massage is very important for procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, breast work, arm reduction, and face lift. It is beneficial to move and drain excess fluid, stimulate circulation to promote healing, decrease pain and inflammation.

Week 1-  Is the most uncomfortable due to swelling, bruising, and pain. Ice packs, routinely taking pain medications, limiting activity, and frequent massage are important to aid in recovery. Frequent massage by a nurse or Lymphatic/Lymphedema certified massage therapist trained to work with cosmetic surgery clients, will be needed during this time. Lymphatic massage is a very specialized massage and should not be performed by a therapist who is not certified. Harm can be caused by moving lymph fluids incorrectly.

Your therapist will teach you how to do massage at home between sessions.  A pillow under the knees when laying down can also help with pain relief. It is important not to remain totally sedentary. Walking and deep breathing will help to prevent blood clots, remove anesthesia and promote circulation and movement of lymph.

Week 2- You should have a decrease in swelling and pain, and bruising is diminishing.  Sutures will be removed if they are not dissolvable. Light walks are generally encouraged.

Weeks 3-4- Depending on your procedure, pain and swelling should be diminishing. It is important to remember that every body is different, and may heal at a different speed. Cavitation and Radio Frequency can be started to aid in additional inch loss and tightening.

Week 6- You should be progressing in your recovery. Scar tissue cupping is safe to begin at this time. You may still experience numbness for a few months to 2 years. Swelling may come and go for months as well. Continue massage and wearing your shape wear if this is an issue. Do not begin an exercise program until cleared by your physician.
